I visited Cynthia yesterday in the LA East territory primarily to conduct the mid-year evaluation. Unexpectedly, I also got to evaluate her driving skills on the Interstate 10 as it related to our recent driving course that we all took.

We were cruising at the speed limit. The driver in front of us on I-10 was completely surprised by an abrupt lane change of another driver. The reaction was a quick turn of the wheel and the driver locked the brakes. The continued turning of the steering wheel caused several 90 degree rear end skids and finally a 180 degree skid that brought the car to a stop and facing oncoming traffic.

Cynthia’s reaction was well controlled … her distance between cars allowed time for good decisions … proper braking kept her car controlled … she watched the stopping ability of cars behind her .. and easily navigated her car past the stopped vehicle. This really was a textbook case from the driving course of how the locked braking results in the skids … and how to avoid a potential disaster.
